Accepting Bikram with a clean and rested mind
I've tried my first Bikram class sometime in 2010, when I was still in Adelaide, working as a wretched auditor (read : shouldering problems, ridiculous deadlines and restricted resources to complete assignments with no progression in my career, thank god for the wonderful friendships that I've built! ).
All I remembered about that class - its really hot, I'm sored for a week, and swore never to go for another class again. Oh..and the urge to cross the road at the Putlteney st. corner at the the pub for a huge ass schnitzel + cold beer....Lucky I did not...walked home and had my leftover soup and I think I did lesser damage like that.
Fast forward to 2012 - my visit to London, and the culprit that had planted the idea to try Bikram in Adelaide 2 years ago, had been encouraging me to go to a Bikram class with her in Canary Wharf. The difference this time - I had a different mindset. Almost 1 month not working (as an wretched auditor), my mind was pysched up to rest and relax. My brain is almost completely detoxed from problems that seems to be never ending, well at least those from work...coz I am worried about how my new job will turn out!
Anyway..braving the cold winter in my light gym wear (tshirt and stretch pants- I'm not ready to do my Bikram Yoga in my sports bra and ultra short shorts yet) - I head to the Bikram Studio @ Canary Wharf, with instructions from Peggy (the Culprit) on how to get there. It was freezing cold...and I only had a light windbreaker!! Am I glad to have reached the studio!!
Registered myself , paid my 15 pounds fees for my first class and a bottle of water - pep talk from Pegs and here we go!
90 mins and 26 poses later ( in a 37-40 degree Celsius heated room) - a very calming and understanding instructor walking us through each poses...I feel relaxed, motivated to stretch just a little more, pushing a bit further and taking it all in. Felt a bit woozy when we reached the floor exercise....the sitting up and lying down again in the heated room is making me a bit nauseous - but apparently, that's normal. I sat and breathe in a even pace and chill and get back into the poses whenever I can and viola, 90 mins of hot, stuffy Bikram Yoga was done!
To be honest, at the 30 mins mark - I mentally wondered when this will end, but I'm glad I completed the class. It was nice, not stressful...not stress to get all the poses done perfectly, just doing it at my own pace ...feeling my spine stretched, my shoulder relaxed and etc. I can truly say, I enjoyed the class.
The amazing thing was : Me and Peg spent our day outdoor for the rest of the day, and its fall - so temperature runs between 4 - 11 degree Celsius.....but we are sweating and feeling warm! It can be the Bikram magic on our metabolism, or its just all playing in our mind.
The rejuvenation of my body continues the next day - I don't feel exceptionally sore, but instead, I find more energy.
am itching for more classes, but until I find out how exorbitant the classes are in Kuala Lumpur (heard that its not cheap and is more expensive than most gym membership), and if the timetable suitable for my schedule.
Until then, I'll continue working out with my Insanity video, and try out the 26 poses sans hot room in the comfort of my room!
Beginning of a healthy journey...and finger crossed! I pray that I do not fall off track this time!
